Variations Theatre Group, Inc. was founded with the principle belief that theatre is meant to be challenging, engaging, and should push the boundaries of audience expectations. In VTG productions, the text and the actor are the most important thing; spectacle isn’t allowed to distract from the intentions of the playwright and performers. The company will give emerging artists the opportunity to work on the classic American plays that audiences have come to love, but in productions reinvigorated by the distinct VTG style. Time will also be devoted to the development of original works by new playwrights.
Because VTG’s members believe in the transformative power of theatre, one of the company’s goals is to bring productions to places where people don’t have access to professional theatre. Additionally, each production will have a “pay what you can” night, in order to ensure that economics will not be a barrier to potential audience members.
The inaugural season of Variations Theatre Group begins in April 2010 with Neil LaBute’s, “The Shape of Things,” a play that, fittingly, focuses on the nature and purpose of art. The season continues with a festival of new works entitled "The Harvest Festival" and the world premiere of “Oregon” by Jay Prasad. The season concludes with Arthur Miller’s classic play “After the Fall.” Everyone involved in Variations Theatre Company hopes you will come out and support them throughout their challenging, but exciting, debut season.
